I believe we become who we are by a unique combination of nature and nurture.
Our early experiences imprint themselves upon our brains and these are what we define as "normal" (even if it's light years away from it!). The way in which we cope with stressors and problems is often what we learned as a result of our upbringing and/or trauma.
These ways of dealing with life may not work in our best interests as adults.
In therapy, it's essential to explore and to process how our past affects our present. Focusing on the here and now holds great importance as well because it can help us to make positive changes in both our thinking and behavior.
Actively working towards creating healthier patterns in our lives will enable us to transform ourselves and our relationships for the better.
